Oracle SQLPlus is a lightweight, command-line interface for Oracle Database, developed by Oracle. It allows developers and DBAs to connect to databases, execute SQL and PL/SQL, and automate administrative and development tasks. Included with Oracle Database and the Oracle Instant Client, SQLPlus runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and is suited for both interactive use and script-driven workflows.

Key capabilities include:

  • Interactive and batch execution of SQL, PL/SQL, and SQL*Plus commands
  • Robust scripting: run files with @ and @@, use substitution (&, &&) and bind variables, prompt for input (ACCEPT/DEFINE/PROMPT), and control error handling (WHENEVER SQLERROR/OSERROR)
  • Output and reporting controls: SPOOL to files, SET and SHOW environment options, column formatting, page and line sizing, headings, BREAK and COMPUTE for simple reports
  • Diagnostics and utilities: DESCRIBE, TIMING, and SET AUTOTRACE (for execution plans and statistics, when configured)
  • Flexible connectivity: connect via Oracle Net (TNS) or EZCONNECT, including administrative connections such as “/ as sysdba”
  • Integration with the host environment: invoke shell commands (HOST), edit statements (EDIT), and leverage startup scripts (glogin.sql/login.sql) for consistent sessions

SQL*Plus is ideal for database administration, schema deployment, troubleshooting, and CI/CD pipelines where a fast, scriptable, and dependable tool is required.
